The Regional Hemlock Program Coordinator will oversee regional efforts to conserve forest and riparian habitat by protecting eastern hemlocks (Tsuga canadensis) from hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) (HWA). This position will supervise a 10-month SCA position, and potentially two seasonal staff. Position will be supervised in the Finger Lakes Region as part of the regional Environmental Field Team, and will report findings and coordinate contracted treatments through the Invasive Species Unit based in Albany, NY (ISU). Certification for chemical treatments of HWA, as an apprentice, may be provided if not already certified. Position will be expected to professionally represent the program in communications and actions in the field. Will be responsible for creating maps and organizing data in ArcGIS and other required formats. This is primarily an office-based position (70%), but will require field work (30%), including off-trail and in inclement weather conditions. Travel throughout the region in an agency vehicle will be frequently necessary. Work conditions include uneven terrain, heat, cold, rain, snow, and frequent exposure to poison ivy, thorns, ticks, wild parsnip, and biting insects. Employees may be required to extend past normal work hours to accommodate specific long travel days or work weekends to accommodate volunteer groups but will not exceed the typical work week hours. Weekend day availability could be required approximately 3/year, and extended days could be as often as 1/week during field days. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
Coordination of HWA management planning and actions in the Finger Lakes Region. o Prioritize hemlock stands based on ecological qualities and management needs. May involve data collection, verifying existing data, and mapping. o Coordinate with the Regional Biologist and Invasive Species Unit to select chemical treatment sites o Develop treatment work orders for term contractor based on prioritized stands. o Communicate and coordinate with parties conducting chemical treatments, including pre-treatment preparations. o Provide guidance to Park staff applying chemical treatments to hemlocks. o Work with other State Park staff to plan, utilize, and track funding/spending for contracted treatments. Supervision:
o Supervise, and provide tasks and guidance to one 10-month SCA member, and up to two seasonal technicians. o Provide trainings and tours for interns, volunteers or park staff aiding in mapping and treatment. o Conduct field inspections of contractors and treatment staff, when needed. Data management and reporting:
o Process and interpret data collected in the field. o Support ISU and Regional report development by providing Finger Lakes specific information for annual reports, grant reports, etc. Other tasks, as time allows:
o Work with the ISU and New York State Hemlock Initiative to plan for releases of HWA biocontrol. o Apply chemical treatments to hemlock communities within state parks as an Apprentice, Technician, or Certified Applicator. o Conduct pre-and post-treatment monitoring of hemlocks to quantify new growth and adelgid density. o Conduct pre-chemical treatment preparations, including tagging trees and mapping treatment areas via ArcGIS and field collector. o Articulate hemlock preservation needs through education and outreach. o Assist with other Environmental Field Team projects.

Salary Range:
From $22.76 to $22.76 Hourly
Minimum Qualification
